One of the problems with Kerensky’s ‘Provisional Government’- the interim power body following the overthrow of the Romanovs- was that they were expected to continue with the Revolutionary momentum that had forced the Royal dynasty to step down, despite them not actually having much invested within the revolution itself.
They found themselves in a position of power in order to prevent their own fate at the hands of the suffering masses. The Bolsheviks and Mensheviks vying for power throughout the empire, the Great War raging on with a chaotic organisation that noone knew how to stop.
In other words, the people asked for a revolution and received one- but it proved to just be in name only, with the Provsional Government being composed entirely of the Tsar’s former ministers and advisors and also being based within the Winter Palace itself- thr former seat of power of the Tsar. This is much akin to Oliver Cromwell following the execution of the English King Charles I in 1649; a king in all but name emulating that which they replaced.
