bcoz all people belief on diff religion that's why he belong to other religion and that' why he do not go.to church bcoz he belong to diff religion

we can also interpret in another way that the convict lost the faith of god because God did not help him during his bad times . He didn't believe in religion because he thought religion is not present in the world as it did not defend him during the time in hell.
