D'Artagnan made his travel from Gascony to Paris to join the elite group of musketeers. His father gave him a letter of introduction to be presented to Monsieur de Tréville, who happens to be the leader of the musketeers

Tréville was at a time the neighbor of the d'Artagnans in Gascony. D' Artagnan is just a minor noble and hopes to uplift the family's fortune by getting his son join the royal regiment. It is this noble backup that fills young d'Artagnan hyperbolic self-importance.
