Democracy is simply define as the Rule of the people, Where peoples are ruling Indirectly by sending their Representative in the respective Government.
As you asked why democracy take a backseat in the middle age, There are plenty of reason so.
1→→At the middle age, "Those who have power of ruling(King), don't want to loose it", So in that case, their army & their administration enforces the laws.
2→→Hunger of Increasing their kingdom - During the time of the middable period, The king used to control the entire administration & he used to follow imperialistic policy . By following such policy rulers of that time were create huge level of War, so that they can occupy other kingdom & have larger area to rule. It screws their own kingdom in result of famine.
3→→One choose the Next Leader when the first one retire or Die- At the time when laws was less established & people have no power , So the leader follow the power grabbing policy . Which simply creates dictatorship & society comes under lack of democracy.
So these are some basic reason why in the middle age democracy screws .
