because ekalavya was an extarordinary archer ....which dronacharya came to know...but he did not want ekalavya to be the best archer as... for him arjun was the best...

Guru Drona asked his guru dakshina from Eklavya as his thumb of right hand as he had promised to make Arjuna the best archer in the world and knew that, if Eklvya wouldn't have given his thumb, then Arjuna wouldn't have succeeded.
