East India Company incur financial burden during wellesleys Regime because of the subsidiary alliance system introduced by Lord Wellesley.
Sir Richard Wellesley also called Marquis Wellesley was the Governor General on India from 1798 to 1805.
Subsidiary alliance system
- He introduced the Subsidiary alliance system which is an agreement between native Indian ruler and English east India Company.
- According to the system, the company protected the native state against invasion by French and in return a subsidy was to be paid to the company.
- This system was not accepted by all and a league was formed by the Indian rulers against the British.
- As a result there was an increase of Lord Wellington's military expenditure, and this caused a financial burden to the East India Company.
- This was condemned by the English Ministers.
