Evelyn Glennie concealed her growing deafness from everyone because she intended to lead a normal life and to be able to “ pursue her interest in music”.
Evelyn was certain that the minute her deafness was identified by friends and teachers, she would face great difficulty in trying to be normal like everyone else and would also be discouraged from taking interest in music, which is exactly what happened. As she herself says, it was a time when life suddenly went “black”. She was lost and there did not seem to be a bright future for her as a person or as a musician.
When she wanted to try playing the xylophone, most of her teachers did not encourage her. In fact, only percussionist Ron Forbes showed faith in her and her abilities.
