Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

x + y = 5 (equation 1)

2x - 3y = 4( equation 2)

Now,

multiplying (eq.1) by 2 and subtracting (eq.2) from (eq.1)

(2x + 2y = 10) - (2x - 3y = 4) => 2x + 2y - 2x + 3y = 6

=> 5y = 6

=> y = 6/5

Putting the value of y in (eq.1) => x+ y = 5

=> x + 6/5 = 5

=> x = 5 - 6/5

=> x = 19/5

Given Equations

x + y = 5

2x - 3y = 4

Method

By Elimination Method

In the elimination method you either add or subtract the equations to get an equation in one variable.

When the coefficients of one variable are opposites you add the equations to eliminate a variable and when the coefficients of one variable are equal you subtract the equations to eliminate a variable.

___________________________

Solution

x + y = 5 ------ (i)

2x - 3y = 4 ------ (ii)

• Multiplying eq. (i) by 3

3x + 3y = 15 ------ (iii)

• Adding eq. (ii) to equation (iii)

2x - 3y = 4

+ 3x + 3y = 15

_______________

5x = 19

x = 19/ 5

• Substituting the value of x in eq. (i) , we get

19/5 + y = 5

y = 5/1 - 19/5

= 25 - 19/5

∴ y = 6/5 = 1.2 ,

x = 19/5 = 3.8
