The salt law devised by the Britishers clearly stated that no Indian could collect or sell salt. They had also imposed a heavy tax on salt law due to which it soon went out from the reach of ordinary Indians. Gandhiji along with his followers thought that it was wrong to impose a tax on such an essential daily use item. So Gandhiji along with his 77 followers performed the salt march or dandi march which was a 385 km long journey from Sabarmati ashram to dandi barefoot. After reaching at Dandi Gandhiji and his followers prepared salt by boiling sea water. He then became a symbol of disobedience against Britishers harsh Rules and policies due to this this movement was also marked as Gandhiji's first disobedience movement against British.
