Answer:

Gandhiji did not choose Nehru as Prime Minister of India. This seems to be an oft repeated social media myth without any valid or verifiable basis.

Nehru was the most natural choice, because he was the more suitable person, compared to other probable contenders, for the top post at that point of time in India's political history.

First let us see who are some people who could have been likely contenders.

Gandhiji rules himself out at the outset, as he would certainly have turned down the offer even if it was made. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had already left the Congress and the country, and was no longer on the political radar of the country of that time. Neither his whereabouts, nor even the fact whether he was alive or dead, was known at that time.

C.Rajagopalachari aka Rajaji, in spite of having stature almost on par with Nehru and Patel, was far too controversial in his opinions and way too outspoken, and could not have mustered enough support from the rank and file, and his being a South Indian too would have cramped his prospects further. The fact that he could not even manage to become the first President of India, despite having been the first Indian Governor General, and with full support of Prime Minister Nehru, could be a pointer to how he could have fared had he aspired to be the Prime Minister of the country.

This leaves Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru as the only two most eligible contenders for the top post.

Patel was 15 years older than Nehru, and was already ailing. Despite his standing in the Congress Party and the freedom movement, he was not very popular south of the Vindhyaswhere only people with serious political inclinations were knowing about him. Patel was also perceived to be rigid and conservative in his political views, which again would not have gone down well with the younger elements in the party/polity. Though Patel had a towering personality within India, he was not as well known outside India,or well versed in international politics. Compared to this Nehru was relatively younger at 58, and much fitter healthwise. He had a popular charisma and a pan-Indian appeal, cutting across geographies and demographies. He was perceived as secular and liberal in his outlook, which gave him a support base among the younger generations both within and outside the Congress.Among all the leaders of the independence struggle,Nehru was the most well known to outside world, apart from Gandhi, and had already won some international recognition.

So, to get back to the question, Gandhiji did not choose Nehru as Prime Minister. Rather Nehruchose himself, due to his overwhelming merit.
