The Non-cooperation movement was suppressed by Gandhiji because of the Chauri Chaura incident. Although Gandhiji had suspended the non- cooperation movement which was also known as the national uprising, on 10 March 1922, but Gandhi was arrested.

Causes of withdrawal of the Non-cooperation Movement:

(i) Due to the Chauri Chaura dispute, 22 policemen were burnt alive due to which Mahatma Gandhi decided to withdraw the motion.

(ii) He also felt the campaign was becoming violent in many places due to clashes and satyagrahis required to be trained well for the mass demonstration.
