Gandhi ji decided to break the salt law because it was one of the most oppressive laws implemented by the colonial rulers . It stopped Indias monopoly in the manufacture and sale of salt. Salt was an indispensable item used in every household and yet Indians were debarred from manufacturing it for domestic use.
The leaders in other parts of the country also organised salt marches parallel to the one organised by Gandhi.
