Gerrard cautioned the Intruder not to kill him because he himself was a criminal and to be hanged. Gerrard ask the Intruder to hurry up and run with him in his car to reach some safer place. The police were likely to come there soon. Then Gerrard opened a door. It was actually the door of a cupboard. The intruder looked into to make sure it was actually a door.
Then Gerrard gave him a push from behind. And hence, Intruder was trapped.
