"Man overboard!" On July 21 1947, Herman was measuring strong winds with his anemometer when Torstein's sleeping bag suddenly went overboard. Herman tried to catch it as it went, he "took a rash step and fell overboard. Herman struggled for his life, even though he was an excellent swimmer, and the rest of the crew frantically tried to get a lifebelt to him. Suddenly Knut plunges head first into the sea, lifebelt in one hand, and makes it to Herman in time. Just as the exhausted men are hauled safe and sound on board the raft, the sleeping bag is dragged down into the depths by something that had just missed a better prey".

After that incident, a lifebelt was hung astern of the raft on a long line in case someone fell overboard in a squall.

And the rescue was not spoken of...not even when Herman Watzinger later presented Knut Haugland with a Christmas present: a silver cup as a token of his great appreciation.
