why did india impose trade barrier?why did it start with globalisation later?

indian govt did so to protect country's companies from international competition as it was an initial stage and india was like a new born baby emerging from status of colony to an independent nation . it later,in 1991 removed barriers as it thought that then indian companies were ready to face international challenge
