Multi purpose projects launched after Independence were considered to be instrument of growth and development and that would integrate village economy with the urban industrial economy and were regarded as Temples of Modern India by Pt. Nehru because:

a. It was felt that these projects would integrate rural economy with urban  economy, would bring about growth and prosperity in the rural areas.
b. They will help to meet the irrigation needs of the farmers while reducing their dependency on the monsoons and would help them in expanding production.
c.  They will generate electricity catering to industrial needs and would help in the functioning of industries. They will thus bring about industrialisation.
d. Multi purpose projects would also attract tourists and would generate income .
e. Dams would ensure regular supply of water in villages to meet both farming and domestic consumption needs.,
