Why did l ' abbaye first refuse to draw to portrait of bartoli?

L'Abbaye told Bartoli that he did not have to pose for him, because he did not want Bartoli to see what he was painting. This was a perfect opportunity to paint a portrait according to his own new ideas, without any restraints.
