In 19th century Europe unity was closely allied with Liberalism.
Even if it had different meanings in economic, social, political spheres and different effects on various classes of people, the people sought it to be the unity emphasiser.

Reasons for its rise :

1. People wanted to abolish the aristocratic privileges.

2. The French ideals influnced people to get united and call for Liberalism.

3. Mid-class businessmens got less share as taxes and state imposed barriers were to be payed.

4. Suffrage was not granted to non-propertied mens and all womens.

5. Revolutionaries felt the need of unity and bonding to oppose monarchy and establish democracy and liberal government.
