Magadha emerged as the most successful of the Mahajanapadas due to following reasons:

1) It had the advantage of its geographic location. Both Rajgir and Patliputra were at strategic locations

2) The region was rich in natural resources, particularly iron which enabled the Magadhan rulers to have better and effective weapons.

3) The land was very conducive for agriculture due to alluvial soil of the Gangatic plains and sufficient rainfall.

4) The use of the metallic coins, rise of towns, collection of tolls boosted the trade and commerce. There was enough accumulated wealth to pay and maintain large armies.

5) Magadha rulers used elephants on a large scale in wars which put them to advantage.

6) The rulers of Magadha were ambitious. They were great strategists and policy makers.

7) The society of Magadha was unorthodox.

1.) Magadha was led by competent and ambitious ruler like Bimbisara and Mahapadmananda .

2.) Magadha had a large military machine with vast infantry , horses , elephants , chariots .

3.) Magadha was inhabited by Kiratas and Magadhas . So , competent rulers could arise from any social group and they in turn promoted Buddhism and Jainism .

4.) The resources of Magadha was broad . The land was fertile and agricultural surplus could be produced . Mainly rich in iron .

5.) It was located at the confluence of Ganga , Gandak and four rivers which can be used as defense , agriculture and trade .

6.) Due to rich minerals as Iron , large number of weapons were produced .
