(i) Mahatma Gandhi found, in salt, a powerful symbol that could unite the country.

(ii) Some of his demands were of general interest, others were specific demands of different classes.

(iii) The idea was to make the demands
wide ranging, so that all classes within the Indian society could
identify with them and could be united in a united campaign.

On 31st January 1930, he sent a letter to Lord Irwin stating eleven wide ranging demands of various classes of India.

Release of poltical prisoners

Cuts in army expenses, civil services salaraies

Changes in Arms Act

Reform of the C.I.D

Lowering of rupee-sterling rate

Textile protection

Reservation of coastal shipping for Indians

A fifty percent reduction in land revenue

Abolition of both salt tax and government salt monopoly
