Mahatma Phule organised a strike of nabhiks to stand against and end the practice of Tonsure.

Tonsure was a practice of cutting off or shaving off of the hair of the scalp symbolising and representing devotion or humility.

Following this Mahatma Phule called for a strike of barbers, taking a tough stand against the practice.

This practice was specifically prominent amongst widow Hindus.
