Why did mandleeve choice garden pea for his experiment

1)normally pea plant was self fertilizing, because of petals and close the reproductive organ till fertilization.
2)the pea plant was easy to cultivate from one generation to next generation only in single growing season
3) the cross pollination can also be achieved easily.
4) the flower are biosexual and hermaphrodite
