he thought that the elements which were supposed to be placed in these blank boxes were yet to be discovered
so he left them blank so that the later elements could be placed there

mendeleev had gaps in his periodic table as he knew that all the elements were not known at that time and many elements were to be discovered in the future. So he left spaces for elements like Scandium, Gallium and Germanium which he named eka-boron, eka-aluminium and eka-silicon respectively as they had similar properties.
