As Mr Easton's right hand is handcuffed with the left hand to shake hand with Miss Fairchild . In course of the story , we come to know that Mr Easton is been taken as a prisoner and that is why the marshall has handcuffed his right hand .

Q) Why does the glum faced man discuss the nature of a marshall's job with Miss Fairchild ?

◎ With his 'shrewd eyes' the original marshall notices how Miss Fairchild's eyes " widening a little are gloved to the glittering handcuffs " . Hence , he assures her of Mr Easton's behaviour because the latter does it as a part of his duty . Actually it proves that the marshal who generously attached his heart with Mr Easton's just as his hand is tied with the prisoners, tries to save the latter's image before the lady.

Q) What light does the story throw on the character of Miss Fairchild ?

◎ Miss Fairchild exhibits her commanding nature as she demands to be allowed to speak first . It is her out spoken quality that prompts her to strike up the conversation . It seems that Miss Fairchild is both bold and an authoritarian lady.
