Mr. Easton was slightly embarrassed because he and a ruffled,glum faced man with shrewd eyes and roughly dressed were handcuffed together. Miss Fairchild was an old friend of mr. Easton and when she would see the handcuffs she would understand what was happening and that would put Mr.Easton down in miss Fairchild's eyes.

Mr. Easton feel embarrassed because he meets one of his old acquaintance, Miss Fairchild while he is being taken to Leavenworth Prison. At first, Mr. Easton was a part of the social elite. But, now he is a criminal accused of counterfeiting and he never wanted her to know the truth in case of her old friend.
He clasped her fingers with his left hand because his right hand is handcuffed with a fat, glum-faced man seated along with him, who is the Marshal.
