Mr.Thompson thought it best not to refer to the child because the child eas sick.Maggie had lost her mother and her siblings had also been taken away,no one was ready to take Maggie in beacuse she was a sick child and of no use.Mr.thompson loved children and therefore took Maggie in in order to care for her.When he reached home ,he saw that his sour-tempered, childless wife Jane was waiting for him angrily,as he did not want Maggie to feel as if she was a burden,he signalled his wife to keep quiet so that he can explain things later in Maggie's absence.He signalled Jane with his eyes.
