Murshidabad lost its importance in the mid 19th century because the administration of Murshidabad became weak and economic condition of the center also declined.

EXPLANATION:

Murshidabad became the capital of Bengal Province during rule of Mughals. As the Mughal administration in the centre declined, Murshidabad rose to power but its growth cannot be sustained for long time due to interference of British East India Company.

After Battle of Plassey in 1757, the last important and major Nawab of Bengal was defeated and from then the administration became very weak because all later Nawabs were just puppets in hands of British.

Also after their victory, British shifted their capital from Murshidabad to Calcutta. With this shift, major economic activities were also shifted to Calcutta from the previous capital city of Murshidabad. This was the reasons for the decline of Murshidabad in the mid 19th century.
