Why did nicola and jacopo remain shabby although they earned enough?

Nicola and Jacopo wanted to save all the money they earned for Lucia(their sister) as she was suffering from tuberculosis in the spine. They lived their life with basic minimum necessities. They wore shabby clothes and ate black bread and fig for their mealsaand they worked very hard to gather the amount of money for the treatment.
