Nomadism is a way of adapting to conditions that are not capable of sustaining a community in a sedentary lifestyle, such as in a very dry or cold climate, or where productivity declines from lack of fertilizer.
Many nomads raise livestock. If the livestock stay in one place too long, they will graze the plants to the point where the plants might not grow back! So it is in their own interest to move.
In tropical areas, some nomads groups raise crops and practice slash and burn agriculture. In those cases, the nomads burn down a wooded area, use the ashes as a fertilizer and raise crops for several years. When the yields go down, the nomads move on. The natural vegetation returns and and eventually replenishes the minerals lost to human activities. ......
