Why did people raise their voice against sardar sarovar dam?
Answers
To implement any decision, the government of the day has to accomodate everyone’s POV into it. Unfortunately, dams by nature create major displacement in population for those who live and work upstream.
The same is the case for Sardar Sarovar Dam. It has been in the news for many years now. Activists have been protesting against it for a long while but successive governments have not been able to address these issues. Development in terms of irrigation and electricity is important but at what cost? Destroying someone’s house, fields or livelihood without properly recompensing them properly…is that a price anyone is prepared to give for uninterrupted power supply?
Unfortunately, the people affected by the dam are not influential enough to form a deciding vote bank. Otherwise, this problem would have been settled a long time back.
