There have been many theories which suggest the possibilities of early human migration to the Philippines. They are:
1. Beyer’s Migration theory
2. Bellwood's Austronesian diffusion theory
3. island origin theory - Wilhelm Solheim's concept
4. Jocano's local origins theory
The first and the most widely known theory is the Beyer’s theory of Migration waves, according to which the ancestors of the Filipinos first came to the island by crossing land bridges which would occur when the sea level was low.
Later, this theory was differentiated as arriving of the ancestors in different “waves of migration”.
The Beyer’s theory is the most popular theory among the lay Filipinos even today, although it has been disputed by the historians and the anthropologists.
