during the succeeding Mamluk rule,Qutubuddin aibakhad to rely on maintaining Delhi as a base to fend of attacks from his Khiljhi rivals from the east as well as rebillious Afghan rivals from the west.
as this saw Delhi becoming a base for economy as well as military purposes. it became a trading hub, a drop of point for caravans and travellers, as well as a residence for sultanate nobles. with all this going well, succeeding rulers continued using the city as a capital and its importance only grew as time went.
