Why did Rabindranath Tagore call his wife "sister-in-law"?

Tagore as Mini's father in the short story Kabuliwallah, tells his daughter that her mother is his sister-in-law. He does this to avoid the difficulty of explaining marital relations of affinity to his little daughter.
