Rana Kumbha or Kumbhakaran singh was the ruler of Mewar between 1433 and 1468 AD, a state in western India belonging to the Sisodia clan of rajputs. He was he son of Rana Mokal and Sobhagya devi. In november 1422, Mahmud Khilji, Sulta of Malwa commenced a series of atacks in Mewar. On April 26 1443, rana Kumbha attacked the Sultan's encampment following an indicisive battle the Sultan returned to Mandu. Ahmad Shah(ruler of Gujarat) and Muhammad Shah(ruler of Delhi) cooperated with Rana Kumbha to combat Mahmud Khilji. During this period, the rulers of Delh and Gujarat conferred on Rana Kumbha the title Hindu-Suratrana (hindu sultaan).

Rana Kumbha became popular beacause of the following reasons ―
1. He was a very brave general and an outstanding ruler of Mewar.
2. Hw had built 32 forts for the defence of Mewar.
3. He constructed the magnificient Kirti Stambh to celebrate his victory over Malwa.
4. He was a very learned ruler.
5. He was a linguist, author, architect and a veena player of repute.
