In the 16th century, publishing books started to gather momentum. This was  feared by many religious authorities, specially the Roman catholic church.

Reasons for opposition by the catholic church:

1. They feared that the printed text, would cause irreligious thoughts in the minds of people and they would become rebellious.

2. King Martin Luther questioned the beliefs of the Roman Catholic church, which added fuel to the rebellions.

3. With print media, the news spread very quickly. Therefore, the rebellions would increase in number very fast and the control over them would decrease.

Answer:

The Roman Catholic Church imposed control over publishers and booksellers because printed religious literature started writing about God and his creation in different ways. They were afraid of the impacts of books on people’s mind.
