why did rutherford select a gold foil for his experiment

Gold foil has the least width, i.e. it is the thinnest foil formed from metals.

Rutherford used gold foil because he needed to explain that there is a dense nucleus at the center of the atom, which he did by passing alpha particles through gold foil which then deflected when it striked the nucleus.
