Why did socrates say that death may be the greatest of all human blessings?

I am not sure why Socrates said that but I can help you out with a reference to the story of Tithonus , the lover of Eos or Aurora(the goddess of dawn) in the Greek Mythology.
Tithonus was blessed with immortality but he begged for death once he realized the futility of living an unending life.
This is how the story goes: Eos made Zeus grant immortality to Tithonus, however she forgot to ask for the boon of eternal youth to go with it. Thus Tithonus lived on, long after all his contemporaries had died. Ravaged by age, his body was reduced to a bag of wracking bones. He wished for death but it evaded him.
A beautiful poem by Lord Tennyson named Tithonus retells the story from Tithonus' perspective wherein he begs Aurora to take back the boon which had long become a curse for him....
