The battalion refused to use the new ‘Enfield Rifle’ because, there was a rumour going on in the Bengal regiments about the use of Pig or Cow fat to grease the cartridges of the rifle which had to be teared by the mouth to use the rifle. The sepoys refused to use the rifle because the pig was a taboo for Muslims and the cow was sacred to Hindus.
