The bhakthi movement became popular in South India from the eighth century onwards. The Alvar & Nayanar saints popularized it. They came from different castes and followed different professions. They preached the path of surrendering oneself to god. These saint poets travelled from place to place by singing hymns in praise of different gods.

The wave of Bhakti movement started from south India, by Alvaras-the devotees of Lord Vishnu and Nayanars-devotees of Shiva. ... Some historians also believed that the Alvaras and Nayanars initiated a movement of protest against the caste system and the dominance of Brahmanas or at least attempted to reform the system.
