During the revolt of 1857, the British has realised that Mughal emperor was still important to the people and they saw him as a leader. It is therefore important for to celebrate British with pomp and show up in Delhi - the city of Mughal had ruled earlier.
The British thought that by doing this they would acknowledge people by their power and authority.
