Answer:
Subsidiary Alliance was basically a treaty between the British East India Company and the Indian princely states, by virtue of which the Indian kingdoms lost their sovereignty to the English. ... The Nawab of Awadh was the first ruler to enter into the subsidiary alliance with the British after the Battle of Buxar.
The subsidiary alliance is a system introduced by Lord Richard Wellesley, British Governor General of India from 1798 to 1805.
Its main principles were:
1. Any Indian ruler accepting the subsidiary alliance with East India Company had to keep the British army in their territory and was supposed to pay for its maintenance.
2. In case of failure of payments, some of the state territories were ceded to the British.
3. The ruler accepting the subsidiary alliance was forced to keep a Brtish official in their territory.
