why did the British think of dividing Bengal ?

The real reason behind the Bengal partition was to break-down the growing solidarity among Bengalis. Bengal, at the time, was the nerve-centre of Indian nationalism.

According to Curzon, however, the reason was to ease the administration, as Bengal was too large to be properly governed by a single governor. Bengal was a humongous province with an area of roughly 490,000 sq. km (as large as France).

It was meant to break the unity among the Hindus and the Muslims, and to encourage communal violence, so that people get distracted and don't concentrate on their demands for independence.
