The british want tribal groups to settle down and become peasent cultivators because of the following reasons-
1.They didn't pay their taxes.
2.As they did shifting agriculture so there was risk of burning of other useful plant.
3.After shifting agriculture the land become barren and no crops or plants could be grow.
4.They didn't help Britishers.

It was because settled peasants were easier to control and administer than people who were always on the move.
