Why did the Buddha's teachings about nirvana appeal to many people of lower castes?

500 followers spread the word, but some people wanted to use Buddhism in other things than what the Buddha was teaching. Why did the Buddha's teachings about nirvana appeal to many people of lower castes? Nirvana gave lower caste people a chance to believe that they would be able to reach a state of peace.
