The nationalists were saddened by the idea of the partition of India.But the Congress finally accepted it for the following reasons:

1.
The whole country was engulfed in communal riots over the partition of India and the Congress was convinced that the only solution to the communal problem lay in the partition of India into India and Pakistan.

he only alternative to partition was a federation with a weak center. A smaller India with a strong central authority was better than a larger India with a weak Center.

3.I
t would lead to immediate independence from the British as the Congress leaders felt that further delay in the transfer of power could find India in the midst of a Civil War.

4.Having a joint government with the Muslim League was not feasible.
