The peasants were compelled to grow the indigo plant in a certain part of their holdings and then had to sell this at a fixed rate to the English planters. The conditions were too difficult for the farmers to fulfil. The British Government then passed many special laws to force the poor peasants to cultivate indigo. Once when the price fell too low it was far more profitable to grow rice but they were not permitted to do so. As a result, the indigo peasants rose in a revolt.
