Italy quit the Central Powers in expectation of “reclaiming” the Dalmatian coast and over former Venetian territories. However, the Italian contribution to the war effort proved less than stella. In 1917 Britain and France had to divert vitally need units from the Western Front to stop Italy collapsing. The Serbians however were felt to have punched above their weight. After the War the other Allies favoured the creation of a pan-slavic state, Yugoslavia, over Italian ambitions.

As in World War 2 Italy's performance was not the fault of the Italian soldiers. Their generals and staff officers were, mostly, incompetent and their politicians had unfeasible ambitions. The ordinary Italian soldiers were brave and stoical. Their airmen were daring and skilled. The Arditi pioneered tactics later adopted by German, Austrian and Ottoman stormtroopers. The Incursori were the first modern combat swimmers, forerunners of today's Special Operations Forces. If any World War 1 military were “lions led donkeys” it was the Italians.

By the way, the idea of being annexed by Italy was so popular in Slovenia, that the Dual Monarchy deliberately deployed Slovenian troops on the Italian front, knowing get they would fight harder there than against the Russians.
