Not just lions or hyenas. He's also friends with tigers, leopards, panthers, and cheetas.
Richardson, who grew up in South Africa, reportedly has been observing animal behavior since he was 16 and studied zoology for about two years at a university. He says he gets bitten and clawed quite often; sometimes playfully, sometimes angrily.
I don't know about hyenas but reportedly he only interacts with lions he knows since their birth. He warns people and say they take things out of context, and that his bound with animals take time. I would presume it's the same for hyenas and he interacts with those grew up around him.
All the animals listed are clan animals. I think it's fair to say they accept Kevin Richardson to their clan. His work is still remarkable of course; if he wasn't excellent at reading these animals' behavior, he wouldn't know when to back off and would get killed a long time ago.
