The narrator was a thief and had made an elaborate plan to rob Anil. He had been chasing him for sometime to find an opportunity to strike a conversation with him. However, the narrator felt he had misjudged Anil because the latter turned out to be a man of meager means. When the former approached him to request him to keep him a servant, Anil replied he could not pay him. Finally Anil offered if the narrator could cook for him, he could feed him.
