Why did the narrator ordered coffee for himself also?

Before the meal, the narrator figured out that he could just about afford to pay for it and have enough money left over to last him until the end of the month if he went without coffee for the next fortnight. So one could see his ordering of coffee at the restaurant as a kind of last hurrah. As the expensive meal draws to a close, this struggling writer now knows for sure that he won't be able to afford any more coffee for the rest of the month. He's determined, then, to make the most of what will be his last cup for a coffee.
